This adaptation took on quite a few liberties (making Anne snarkier and more expressive, use of modern words/phrases, and Anne talking directly to the audience, looking at the camera contrary to previous versions, sarcasm, etc.) that just didn't go well together. One moment it's funny, one moment it's sarcastic, and one moment it's serious, reminding you again that you're watching a beloved Jane Austen story brought to life (supposedly).
Anne looking at the camera and talking to the audience, plus the insert of modern words/phrases, made it cringy to appreciate the adaptation and take it seriously. This version's Wentworth also seemed uncomfortable throughout the movie, making it feel weird to watch him sometimes.
But there was humor, chemistry between the leads, and they did well in portraying emotions (longing/pain) with their eyes, and I appreciated the diverse cast. They missed the mark on the direction/angles they were trying to go. This adaption sort of lost the essence of the story.
