Even though I prefer the more swash-buckling adventure stories like The Count of Monte Cristo, Harry Potter, The Three Musketeers, and Captain Blood, the first book that comes to mind when I ask myself ‘what is the best book I have ever read’, Germinal is still my answer. Although if I am being reasonable, a silly image forms of an old errant knight, in my head, who refuses to accept defeat through any conquest, and is now jostling the author of Germinal off from upon his triumphant stand :) (Penguin Classics)
