I went into this movie with a heavy heart hoping that it would be littered with "woke" messaging. However much the other comments like to put it, the only thing woke about it was the race changes. I enjoy that this is an adaptation of the original and not a carbon copy. They gave Eric and Ariel's relationship some much-needed elaboration instead of "ooh, a pretty human man! Let me save him and fall in love with him!"
Alongside this, I would love to elaborate on the casting of Ariel's actress. Although I think disney may have wanted to be woke by casting the main character as mixed instead of being a white woman, the casting itself was amazing. Overlooking the race-swap, she plays the role perfect. Everything from the delivery of her lines to her mannerisms were amazing and I loved the interactions between her an all of the other character.
However, while considering the source material of the first little mermaid movie, not everything is 100% accurate. Eric is adopted instead of being born from the original. However, this helps lead to a much more exciting environment in the movie that I think is a wonderful artistic choice.
Other's complaints also happen to question why an underwater world may be darker than the surface. I think that it's important to consider what actually being underwater is like.
When considering other live-action adaptions of movies, I think that this adaptation was one of the best. The story was amazing, the new added songs were catchy and fun to listen to, and even if there was no "Little Mermaid" from before, I would still love this movie. 9.5/10
