Honestly? Despite going into this movie with low expectations, I kinda liked it. I went in with with some friends to blow off some steam after a stressful exam, but it actually ended up being a fun experience. A lot of the humor is dumb and relates to characters being extreme caricatures of specific people, but that works as a strength to the movie.
What I liked:
- The movie is not serious whatsoever, and it doesn't try to convince the viewer that it is. It knows that half of its demographic is 7-year-old children while the other half is teens/adults who grew up playing the game and watched it out of faithfulness to the source material. For the latter, it knows that they're probably nerds who can appreciate dumb humor.
- Fun to watch with friends. The entire time we watched it, we were cracking up and laughing about some dumb joke or reference.
- Jason Momoa's character was refreshing to see. Typically, I see him in serious roles, but seeing him act in an exaggerated manner that fits how I personally see him was the first thing that made me realize that the movie wasn't going to be what I had in mind. Truthfully, all of the characters were reflections of Minecraft's fanbase, as they're all losers (positive connotation) in their own way.
- General Chungus. I absolutely LOVED him. At first, I laughed at his name, but his attitude and humor were some of my favorite parts of the movie.
- I almost started cheering when I heard Pigstep. Probably my record in minecraft, despite being an old gen player :)
Things I Disliked:
- Character development. By making a lot of the characters caricatures, not many of them were fully fleshed out.
- Some of the comedy is just "Jack Black does Jack Black thing." Although it was still funny since I'm not familiar with many of his roles, I still think it would have been better if Steve had his own distinct character without being tied to Jack Black's signature "goofy" style.
- Intro felt rushed. The intro to this movie almost made me think I wouldn't enjoy it. While I did laugh at a lot of the jokes because they were so absurd, it didn't feel necessary.
- The worldbuilding was left up to the audience already knowing about Minecraft or Jack Black announcing a word. Me and my friends tallied up about how many nouns were sound by Jack Black and a grandiose way, and we reached about 50. It ended up being a somewhat funny joke as it kept going on, but I would have been very confused if I had never played Minecraft before.
-The plot kinda sucks. It's definitely not an award-winning story, it's just there to make you laugh.
Overall, it's not the Minecraft movie that I wanted, but I still liked it. It feels like a youtube video made by a teenager with a REALLY high budget. It's definitely a family movie, but I can see this hitting well with the target demographic that I thing this resonated with the most: Nerdy highschoolers who grew up playing Minecraft.
