This series has everything going for it. An enthusiastic fanbase, the author in the writers room, an excellent cast, and the funding to excel. But somehow it still just misses the mark.
I feel like the writers forgot what fans watch an adaptation for. They want nostalgia, concentrated and presented in one singular vision. That vision doesn’t have to be perfectly book accurate (Look at Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter) but it must hit enough of the source material to maintain the spirit of the story.
Up until episode 5 the deviations from the book all seemed to add something to the show. The changes made the story flow better on screen or highlighted certain characters in an interesting way. But episode 5 took everything interesting about its chapter of the book and threw it out the window. Worse, it highlighted more significant changes to come in the next episode.
I think I speak for every fan when I say that I want this to be the first of many seasons, but the show is in its infancy and it, well, shows. My only hope is that the writers hold fast to the little moments that make percy jackson so special to us all because tragically they haven’t shown us many.
