I had envisioned something so much more in a film adaptation of a book I was so easily lost in. I didn't believe the characters, didn't feel the depth of emotion, and I almost wish I hadn't gone to see it. Maybe if you skip the book the movie will be better.
I did and do have questions about how the author wrote Jumpin and Mabel and what consultations were had with the Black community.
Almost felt like it was a rush production not given the budget it deserved to tell the story in a more visually stunning way. There was a hastiness to it. The book was an escape. The book was about a little girl left alone and she figured it out - the men in the film all saved the day. Not what I wanted.
Oh well - I'm sure everyone worked really hard and it'll make a bunch of money.
