One of my favourite films. The atmosphere of Vienna, recently emerging from the Nazi era and entering the new dangerous world of the Cold War, is caught perfectly. The uncertainties, chance opportunities and newborn unpleasant dangers of a ravaged chaotic post-war Europe are captured brilliantly in the limelight of the superb lighting, acting and drama of the film. Then there's the beguiling music which adds a dynamic dimension and invokes subtle emotion, resulting in unique cinematic perfection.
