What a disappointment. This world has so much potential, and they just wasted it to produce a no-heart, by-the-numbers adaptation. With amazing adaptations like The Last of Us, Fallout, Mario Bros, Sonic etc coming out in recent years, I though Hollywood finally knew better. Boy was I wrong.
With the exception of Krieg, everyone was miscast; I mean, c'mon, Kevin Hart as Roland?! He's no taller than Tiny Tina! Jack Black as Claptrap sounds good on paper, but holy $#!T does it fall flat. I didn't laugh once. Blanchett is just too old to play Lilith; her moves are wooden and she just looks bored on screen. Ariana Greenblatt tries her best; I don't know if it's the bad writing or what, but she fails to capture that true spark that made me fall in love with Tiny Tina in BL2.
Right out of the gate I could tell this wasn't going to go well by Lilith dropping the opening exposition when they should have used Marcus like the games do. The plot is nonsensical, the insane weapon choices that are a staple of the games is all but ignored (Marcus is criminally underutilized even though they nailed his look and voice), the action scenes are just bad (I'm looking at you, Caustic Caverns...did the psychos just all of a sudden lose all their guns after Lilith found the key???), the antagonist is just laughably uninteresting (why not use Handsome Jack????), and the ending is just such a letdown. Also, other than a couple of spit-second scenes, you don't see any of the diverse Pandoran fauna we all loved to fight in the games. No Catch-A-Rides, either?? There's even a scene where they need to catch a damn ride!!!
The only positives I can say about this is that they do a pretty good job of capturing the look and aesthetics of Pandora. Also, you can occasionally hear that classic banter that Psychos are known for, but not nearly enough in my opinion. This is the reason this review isn't a 1.
That's it.
TL;DR: This movie is a monumental letdown and, if you a BL fan, just avoid it. It's not entertaining, it's unfunny, and it's just....blahhh. It doesn't come close to doing the IP justice.
