I've read this book twice. In 6th grade, and this year (2025). When I first read, it wasn't too bad and I liked the ideas it had. The characters were ok and I was really into Wab. (Somewhat inspired one of my ocs.)
I read it this year, and I wanted to see if I missed out on anything I didn't understand the first time and appreciate the book more, but it got a lot worse.
First, the characters are all very empty besides Frenchie and Miig. Rose is just a love interest with a semi sad backstory, Chi boy is empty, Tree and Zigzagoon or whatever their names were pass a hat, Slooper is food and Riri is just there to die and be cute. Wab is the best out of these guys, but she's hardly focused on and in my opinion, is a better main character than Frenchie, but at the end of the book, she gets pregnant? In her chapter where we learn her backstory, she got raped, and it messed her up badly, to the point where she's very closed out and feels nothing. She was close to Chi boy, but that's not good character growth. It's so bad it changed how I write characters.
Miig is somewhat interesting, with his husband Issac being taken away by the recruiter people, but like Wab, he becomes irrelevant.
Rose, like I said, is just a love interest, and she's somehow supposed to be the 2nd main, despite not doing much of note.
Frenchie is not that good of a main character. He is actually decently likeable in the first half, with his brother being taken away and being in this group, but by the second half, he becomes an asshole to Rose for hanging out with some NPC I forget his name and when he tells Rose to leave him alone, he's sad that she does? He changes waaayyy too much in the second half. The romance is really underdeveloped and it's easily the worst part.
Riri dies and is forgotten about and Minerva dies and although it's sad, it's not that impactful if we talked and understand her so little.
I still like the ideas of marrow having some sort of dream elements to them, but it's also barely touched on beyond the basics. We're not even told if it's actually safe.
The world is just apoplectic and yeah. We don't see anyone else's perspective besides the indigenous characters. There's gotta be other people who are severely harmed. They can't all be mindless zombies who want marrow.
Overall, the world and characters are underexplored and i wish I liked it more, but I can't. It's about 230 pages but it's setting up 1000s.
Idk, I gotta stop yapping. Maybe someone could make a comic or rewrite it. There's a second book, but from what I've seen, it doesn't seem like an improvement much.
