Thanks to a couple of free months on CBS all Access, I was able to view both Discovery and Picard. Although Discovery is visually stunning, and certainly has original storylines, there are several drawbacks:
1) they should have called it "Star Trek: Michael Burnam, because the show is about her. Everyone else is along for the ride. Almost every episode, we get some long speech from her "discovering" something about her or her family.
2) because so much time is spent on Burnam, there is little time left for other character development. There are several bridge crew officers I don't even know if we were given their names. The Dr./engineer relationship was welcome, but we know so little about the other characters.
3) so many plot holes. Such a complicated plan to "get rid of" Discovery at the end of season 2, even though there were many other easier ways.
Picard was much easier to watch, probably because we were already dealing with characters that had been developed in other shows.
