The film was pretty well done! I enjoyed it as much as I could, and I feel like the execution of the overall plotline was decent. But unfortunately, it feels a little like they took my childhood story and mixed it up in a bowl, extracting all my favorite parts and continuing to mix it, baking away all the potential and pulling it out of the oven burnt. What I'm trying to say is that the film had so much potential and I like the idea of giving the sisters more shine but they removed the song of the sisters and added a new one which barely sufficed as a song (the skuttle butt which I'll talk about later) in replacing it? I just don't think it was that good.
Now, it wasn't a complete blast or I'd be out here giving this movie one star. I did enjoy the princess song, I think it was a nice musical addition and it added something new to the atmosphere of the movie also helping to better understand the princes' point of view. I also enjoyed the fact we were able to see the prince's mother with her also being black (nothing against Africans, perhaps it was meant to represent adoption which is a very upsettingly neglected part of life that people tend to brush away as if it's not even possibility so that part was slightly refreshing to see if that even WAS the intention), but I do think those hoping to see a film that replicated their childhood memories into a more real-life experience, would be extremely let down by the changes in the film.
The reason I've switched perspectives like that is that as much as I support the idea of inclusivity, being a non-white person myself, I feel like if they wanted to find a way to bring inclusivity into the Disney world, they could perhaps create another film where a perhaps an african-american person starred in it or perhaps a live-action adaption of a classic where a race change would actually make sense, example, Snow White because her race is unclear and she has potential to perhaps be Asian.
I am not in any way against Halle Bailey's acting and I do support her if she is looking to act in other films, I just don't think The Little Mermaid was the film. Not to mention the skuttle-butt which was absolutely atrocious. If you want to include a rap put it into an extra, because there's no reason they should've had to remove Les Poisson, AND the Sisters' song to include a rap that does not fit the film at ALL.
Honestly, I was really disappointed by the poor quality of this film. I'd give it a 60%. Especially because I saw so much more potential.
