This initial book by Mike Severns on the topic I understand was politely rejected by E. Allison Kay, who said "I can't recommend your book." Her reasoning was rather nebulous and vague, and she may have been looking at it solely from the standpoint of a seasoned conchologist/malacologist. I think that from a general reader's view (as well as an amateur conchologist/malacologist), this book more than fits the bill, despite a few omissions that aren't found in his much larger tome published in 2011: "Shells of the Hawaiian Islands - the Sea Shells" - the mollusk Lotoria lotorium for one (it was first probably known from this archipelago by the capture of a 125mm crabbed specimen found by Mr. Severns off south Kihei, Maui in 1986 (there may have been others found earlier, but I'm not aware of any reports to this effect) ). -Tony Arioli
