In the book, Nica and Rigel frequently discuss their muddled history with the lady from their experience growing up, Margaret Stoker. While Nica was fiercely manhandled by the lady, Rigel was her #1 and the lone youngster saved from her maltreatment — which just exacerbated his sensations of segregation and disgrace. In the film, a similar relationship with the lady exists, however not at all like the book where she was supplanted by Mrs. Ice chest when Nica was 12, Margaret was as yet the lady when Nica and Rigel were embraced.
