Directorial debuts we see every year.
Olmo Schnabel knocks it out of this park with this film!!!
I asked myself if the movie was so good because of his immaturity or because he was incredibly mature for a young man/director? The answer the more I thought about it was that he was just FEARLESS. He filtered nothing for the audience. The film has non stop twists and turns that are simple to follow and understand but does not let the audience goer figure out or guess what is going to happen by foreshadowing.
The acting is exceptional! As good as you can get from a leading star in the highest of budgeted films or lower budget films with highly acclaimed directors including all foreign productions.
The cinematographer and the director picked a kind of visualization, grain, composition and colors to appear and colors NOT to appear on screen which you see, feel taking the ride through this beautiful, film. I almost wrote edgy but that would be like calling The Catcher and the Rye edgy. The film nor the book I just mentioned are edgy, they are real life with no filter on the film or their actors.
The music and soundtrack were amazing. A super skilled symphony of notes and sounds married together rises, falls and explodes when needed supporting, slowing down and moving the film forward at all times effectively never drowning out the actors vocals.
Pet Shop Days is one of the best film made over the last 2 decades. It has revised both my hope and interest in filmmaking.
