Whilst this is a remake of infernal affairs, I’ve got to say I do believe this to be the finest work of Scorsese alongside Goodfellas. The adjacent lives of the moles unfold and unravel with Matt Damon probably giving the strongest performance I’ve seen from him other than The Fantastic Mr Ripley. Di Caprio was also fantastic and Mark Wahlberg’s callously sarcastic Boston cop made for some great dialogue and entertainment. The real stars of the show, however, are undoubtedly Jack Nicholson’s Oscar worth performance and the explosive events that unfold in the last 20 minutes. Nicholson’s character has so much range, he’s insane, sadistic, ruthless, witty, deceiving and even comical at times throughout the movie and with the amount of improv he did in this film it’s unsurprising that he steals the show, the man is undoubtedly one of the best ever. The ending with the rat crawling across the wall which followed Matt Damon’s fate was also fantastic and a fitting ending to what despite being a remake, is also a unique masterpiece.
It’s not one you want to miss.
