A poor imitation of 'Dark'. Has potential but wastes it. Brolin is outstanding. The "villian" played by Will Patton is awful. His lines read as if they're written by a high school drama student. They're not good. He pontificates so much I instinctively roll my eyes the moment he appears on screen. Then his son or sons boyfriend (can't tell because he's too insignificant to care about) who sings like a lame Youtuber desperate for clicks - super cringey and feels forced.
Maybe that's my summary for the whole series: Feels forced. Maybe it gets better but 3 episodes in and I'm starting to doubt it.
Edit 1: Almost finished episode 4 and I find it much easier to watch if I simply skip every scene that features either Patton or the annoying yet simultaneously forgettable singing guy. That actually helped because it has spared me at least 2 additional cringey songs and at least 2 poorly written, poorly acted evil monologues. Without those horribly awful things, the series is much better but just average. Maybe it will get better...
Edit 2: Nearing the end of episode 5. Skipped another (seriously, Amazon??) cringey song from Nameless Dude I Cannot Care About. Ugh. The rest is surprisingly formulaic for a show trying so hard to be different. Maybe it will get better...
