WOW!!! From the magnificent casting to the cinematography and accompanying soundtrack this movie is COMPELLING! Writer/director John Lee Hancock’s masterpiece has much to applaud.
Firstly, Washington, Malek and Leto are a dynamic trio. Each actor’s portrayal of their characters is exceptional and the characters themselves are complex, emotional and relatable; supporting cast is equally laudable. The energy brought to the screen with this trio is palpable.
Secondly, photographer John Schwartzman nailed the 5 C’s of cinematography. Each scene is tight and revealing, yet leaves room for inference and mystery contributing to the noir -like tone of the film. Settings are simple and yet the viewer is drawn in through the use of various camera angles and attention to details. I loved the ‘roast beef’ street sign during Deke’s surveillance, driving past the cross and the boots left on the bed. Finally, the use of shadowy techniques and dark lighting enhance the viewers’ suspense!
The final layer of ingenuity in the film is sound. From the dialogue exchanges to the well-chosen selection of songs and rhythmic heartbeat-like score woven into nearly every scene. I found myself breathing (or not) as scenes transitioned.
Don’t multitask while watching this film or you’ll miss “the little things” that make it so worthwhile!
