Well… after reading some of the 1 star reviews, I feel compelled to give 5. From the sound of a lot of the almost nonsensical text the 1 starers left, they seem to be pretty upset because the reality of racism was highlighted. And a lot of “don’t watch this if you don’t want to be bummed out, don’t watch this if you want to keep your good vibes.” Guys, it’s honestly such a privilege that you get to live in a vacuum where you can pretend these things aren’t real. It’s pretty overt racism that’s depicted, and usually it’s not so intense, but these kinds of people definitely exist and they are everywhere. I live in an area where many are proud to act this way. “This was so disturbing,” yeah and it’s the effing reality we live in. Aw, poor you, you had to be subjected to it for 90 minutes? It made you sad? I feel SO sorry for you!!! *eye roll*
Lots of, “racism will never end, and these kinds of films just perpetuate it,” kind of comments, too. The dark reality we live in needs to be highlighted for people to truly grasp its weight. And, honestly, every single person who has suffered from the affects of discrimination deserves this kind of light being shown on these kinds of events. Would you prefer we sweep it under the rug? Why? Because you’re ignorant, and you’re selfish. For you, ignorance is bliss. But that ignorance is irresponsible.
“Racism will never end.” Yeah, not in our lifetimes. It really hasn’t been that long since some of the worst events in history that were born out of racism happened. Someday, maybe 100s of years in the future, people will have their wits about this and understand that race doesn’t have anything to do with value, and the only way that’ll happen is if people highlight and condemn it, just like they did with this film. Survival of the fittest. There’s no way to stop progress, not completely. Unless we all die first. Otherwise, it will end someday.
