This film is one of the five best things I’ve ever seen in any theater anywhere. First, of course, I’m an enormous Aretha fan, but it’s Aretha in her heyday when the voice was young, pure and perfect. Pure gold. So we get the miracle that is Aretha and it’s a blessing. Then, whatever genius - and I mean genius - it was at Warner Music who thought of filming it and sending the great Sydney Pollack to do it, should get an Oscar if they’re still alive or posthumously if not. This is the live recording of the all-time grossing gospel album in history. It’s perfect. Aretha is perfect. And it’s church. Don’t miss it in the theaters.
