I listened to this only because I was asked to by a higher up….Like another reviewer stated, the book in itself is a hard read, the writing itself is poor and not concise, it’s repetitive. The author goes on and on about “my time in the marines during…[insert training exercise or mission] taught me ____.” Everything comes back to the same few ideas, ideas that are nothing new or revolutionary to anyone who has lived any sort of life whatsoever. The author cones across as arrogant, as if he knows better than anyone else because again, he was a marine. Everyone is entitled to their opinions about the military, I myself believe that anyone who signs up to fight in foreign lands is a fool, and eager for violence. In my opinion anyone who signs up for the military branches fighting overseas, is not worthy of being considered a good leader, a good leader has high ethical and moral standards, stepping back and removing yourself from the situation is something repeated over and over again in the book, and yet he himself does not apply it. If the author viewed the military from a detached perspective like he preaches, he would see that (currently) the US military complex is a terrorist organization that only bootlicking followers would sign up for.
To summarize: The author is repetitive and arrogant/self righteous, the lessons are nothing new, the writing itself is poor, and the hypocrisy is evident. A difficult listen…
