What a movie. The movie doesn't rely on CGI/other-worldly scenes as much as Bahubali/RRR/KGF, but rather the story and screenplay. Hats off to Mani Ratnam sir for pulling off the difficult feat of condensing a 5-volume novel into 2 solid films. The first part is very promising and makes us anticipate Part 2.
What can I say about the cast? Perfection. Vikram slips comfortably in his role as Aditha Karikalan, performing well in the limited screen time he has. Karthi is pitch perfect as Vanthiyadevan, his funny sense of humour and jolly personality keeps the audience engaged. Trisha as Kundhavai was integral to the narrative and performed well. And what about Aishwarya Rai? I mean Nandini! Wow wow wow, hats off
Finally, one big positive is that this film actually manages to immerse us into the world of the Cholas and make us immerse into the human emotions, rather than make us look like outsiders but revel at how otherworldly the visuals are (which is what Bahubali does).
5 STARS.
