I just started watching this show and have mixed feelings. I am a teacher and have had a lot of kids with traits like those of the Jack character and maybe Harrison but not so many who were like Violet.
Several reviewers feel that this is a harsh and unrealistic depiction of Autistic people. The problem isn’t that these characters are unrealistic, but rather that the producers have only chosen to present one point along the spectrum. It would be nice if there were additional characters on the show who were more autonomous and self-sufficient and were more successful in mastering social cues. By omitting those characters, the uninformed viewer doesn’t get a full understanding of the how broad the spectrum really is and how wildly successful some ASD people can be.
