It's a really good film, considering the budget. I didn't expect it to be so emotional 😢 there were more layers to the film, especially about death, destruction and trauma following war. The acting was so compelling and the scenes really reveal the physical and emotional devastation of nuclear weapons in the form of Godzilla. I'm a fan of the monster but I was invested and hoped their plan would work out! Like it was intriguing and got me so engaged to see how it unfurled. The downside is it's a super male dominated film, with women playing the supporting role to further the narrative. Sure some would argue it's reflecting society at that point and time but it's also fictional so 🤷

Godzilla Minus One

Beautiful film, love the characters. So real and captures the simple parts of life that make it so wonderful. I didn't like the sexual objectification of women though, and I wish the story centered more on Meadow's character, her wants, desires etc that extend beyond her role as Jabari's lover. We know about Jabari's ex, but not about her. Carmen was reduced to just the ex-lover, without any other significance. In her debut, his picture was there. She left early from her event. Whereas in his career, it's very much about him and his achievements...no influence from Meadow. I just find that annoying because it clearly shows the film was directed by a male.

*mild spoilers* 2 stars for the diversity of dinosaurs in the show but the storyline is horrible. Did they even bother to ask JP fans what it is that made the movie so unforgettable? It was the dinosaurs! The science! JW3's teasers made you think its gonna be about how these dinosaurs interact with our ecosystems but NOPE. Plot centres on some capitalistic company's ambition for world dominion which goes awry. Oh wow surprise!

I'm halfway through but from his writing itself you can clearly tell his prejudice against Africa versus Europe or USA. I think the explanation of Russia, USA and China's geopolitics was good. You can tell that's his strength but very shallow for Africa. In his text he mentions Africa's rivers and streams were terrible for navigation so they didn't prosper into a geopolitical power. Umm..hello...how did Mansa Musa singlehandedly control gold price in 14th century? And why discredit the continent's development because it didn't have gunpowder or modern writing? That's a very narrow and white washed viewpoint. I've yet to start with Asia and the rest. You'll learn a thing or two for sure from this book, but keep in mind it's more like an opinion piece so read with a critical lens.
