I really wanted to like this show. I love all things spooky and witchy (AHC: Coven forever) and I even loved Kiernan Shipka in Mad Men. Unfortunately, this show is terrible. It looks like it was very expensive all-around, and the concepting, filming, and production are all very creative. But the final product is overly trudging and dark with no relief. The characters tend to be either obtuse or one dimensional, and no one’s backstory is really explained in a way that drives any audience connection or compassion. I genuinely didn’t like anyone in this show. Hilda’s character felt starkly out of place. She was mostly endearing, but sadly any of her warmth was bulldozed by the infinite assembly line of fear, punishment, and tragedy blasting her family and acquaintances. Ambrose did offer a minimum amount of desperately needed cheekiness, and okay, I would NOT kick Nick Scratch out of bed. 🔥
None of the acting was particularly terrible, it just felt like nothing and no one really fit together. The plot was erratic and uncomfortable and really gave no incentive (or assistance) to follow what was going on.
I’m bummed. I thought it had real potential, but it was just Riverdale on Satan.
