Engaging attempt at a modern take on a bit of history supposedly "forgotten." Female empowerment in the time of ruling patriarchy etc etc.
The weird occult angle - very much Victoriana but then the weird disclaimer in Ep.1 that says it's an imagining or something is meant to clear that up. It makes it ok in theatre land, I guess?
I mean the writer did good to get this female led ensemble programming to be funded.
In reality, it is all it is. An exercise in great marketing to the controllers and commissioners at BBC head quarters. A good story. Probly in the guise of 2002s Cassanova with David Tennant.
I mean the Beeb doesn't reinvent the wheel does it?
Give it a watch. It kind of makes sense.
