Overall, the movie was good, although Tora Tora Tora! was better at sticking to the historical aspects and avoiding the mundane (although I understand the need to show the humanity behind the people...at least it didn't come close to the cheesiness of Pearl Harbor).
Some of the battle scenes should have you thinking of the courage required to face what might have seemed like certain death while still performing your duty, such as flying directly into anti-aircraft fire and still going for your target. Few movies present this in a way that shows the true fear these guys faced. Some of the battle scenes reminded me somewhat of Saving Private Ryan's opening sequence.
I think the movie also avoids over glamorizing war, which is often done. Yes, there are heroics, but that actually happens - what's good is that it also shows the stupidity, the errors, and the sheer terror that comes with these conflicts.
