I recommend Pieces of Her. The opening few lines are captivating and were the reason why I purchased this book. These lines also informed me that I would like the writing style, and I did. This book is a superb thriller that contains original plots and sub plots. The most appraisable takeaway in my opinion is how well executed the plots/sub-plots were WITH the added factor of different time frames.
This is the first thriller I've read in a REALLY long time and I was very impressed by how well put together the plot was, especially as the story deals with and is told through a lot of different time narratives - but it was really well executed and wasn't convoluted to a point where it felt like I was wading through concrete (though admittedly I had to reread certain parts to fully understand the plot). The book deals with themes that aren't really common to thrillers (in my opinion), like mall shootings for instance, which gave the book a certain freshness and an air of originality. It just worked. The protagonist is a bit annoying though - very lukewarm and constantly stuttering - but I guess that was the point. Meaning her blandness was likely intended by Slaughter to spotlight the vivacity of the mother. I also felt like Nick's personality was palpable at times - a very well written character with great dialogue. (SPOILER AHEAD) The only criticism I have is that when Andy finally made contact with her mother after being on the run, the conversation was too calm. Like, you're FINALLY talking to your mother - the person who for weeks you've repressed the urge to call, who told you STRICTLY not to call her unless she calls you, yet she picks up the phone and not only is Andy not really freaking out but Laura too is just...mellow? No screams, reprimanding, hushed warnings. I was really confused why Slaughter chose to write such a mellow reunion. Also, what the hell happened to Gordon? He just disappeared off the face of the earth, when he was also such a vivid character. All we know is that he helped with the disposal of the body. I felt like his ending was unsatisfying because he had such a close bond to Andy and was such an integral part of her life, and in the end he just dissolved into air. (SPOILER OVER)
