"Shiuli is a Bengali name. Why'd you name her that?"
"She used to love the month of October when shiuli (Night Jasmine) used to fall in the grass. She used to collect and smell them."
"Shiulis fall from the tree and die early"
"Maybe that's why she fell from the 3rd floor and.."
October is not a love story, it's a story about love, empathy and selflessness. Imagine yourself being a reckless young guy who himself doesn't know that he cares about people deeply.
He only had to hear , "Shiuli wanted to know where you are (before she fell from the 3rd floor and went into deep coma)"
They never had an actual conversation when she was okay, they only had these brief few moments of sharing quiet looks, subtly setting up a quiet, wordless connection between them but knowing the fact that she cared about him awakened his loving, caring side.
In his mind, he was closer to being one of her own more than ever. He suffered the pain of seeing his loved one in the ICU , may nobody has to deal with this but in the end she doesn't survive. Just like the night jasmine, she departs early, at a young age.
While leaving, she gave her the scar that might never heal but he chose to live with those memories . He took the jasmine tree shiuli once planted and kept it close to him just like he kept Shiuli close to his heart forever.
It's strange how a simple yet terrific plot can make you sit in front of the screen for two hours without getting bored. There wasn't much dialogue, Banita talked with her eyes.
October is a poetry in motion. Do watch it when it's a melancholic day, you'll fall in love with it.
