Wow, where do I begin...it really felt like I was watching a Disney channel movie more than a Marvel Studios production at some point. I am sad to say that Kamala Khan as a character (and the entire Ms. Marvel storyverse) deserved so much better than the cringefest this show had to offer. Iman is adorable in her own right, but I do feel that a more mature actress could have brought more screen presence to the role.
Every single aspect of Pakistani culture (which is really just very very stereotypical Indian culture, with Indian songs and cultural references) that the show touches on is overemphasized to the point that this show became unwatchable at certain points. It was truly bizarre at some points, particularly the Jalebi Baby/Tesher cameo and the episode 1 bit with the head bouncing off walls. Really felt like they threw in a little bit of everything trendy on South Asian social media and expected it to mesh well together.
The only saving grace is the guy who plays Kamala's dad. (Funny enough, the entire Pakistani TikTok community rallied to get him fired during production because they couldn't handle an Indian guy cast as a Pakistani man. I did not see the same energy when a Pakistani man got cast as an Indian in Eternals.) There is a lot of mention of diversity and equity without any substance to those claims, which is something I have seen in literally every recent Disney production.
Moral of the story: Quality of representation matters more so than just blatantly performative "representation" itself. The list of horribly written POC Disney characters is seemingly never-ending - Rose Tico from Star Wars, Finn also from Star Wars, and now Kamala from Ms. Marvel :( Moon Knight is the only recent example that I can think of that got it right, which portrayed Egyptian culture beautifully without affecting the story.
