So disappointed. This is a lovecraft story in name alone and used as a marketing ploy. It actually would have gotten a higher score if it didn’t try and trick its audience. This is a science fiction thriller set in Jim Crow America with blood gags and very little horror monster moments. The closest you will get tho Elder Gods will be in the first episode in a 1950’s sci-fi style sequence after that you’re out of luck. Now where this show shines is showing the true horror of Jim Crow America which frankly is terrifying by itself but then throws as many fantasy tropes as it can at you to see what sticks. Magic, Time Travel, Robots and Aliens just to name a few. The cast is lead by Jonathan Majors who emotes well but mumbled through the entire series which was a real downer. The choices of music was another jarring part of this series. One episode alone goes from Rihanna to Bo Diddley to Marylin Manson and in not in a good way. By the end our heroes answer hate with hate leaving you feeling let down and disappointed. It was entertaining enough but not binge worthy and will be skipping season 2 if they decide to milk this (even tho it feels final).
How Bad Robot and HBO green lit this is beyond me.
