First off, Ian Flynn is back at it again with another banger of a script. Bro just does not miss!
Even though this is yet another boost-style sonic game (definitely not my cup of tea), it is still designed with a solid feedback loop and I appreciate it very much.
The hub-world is a free-roaming playground which offers a fantastic environment to encourage experimentation with new abilities and allows you to grow familiar with game mechanics in a way that feels natural. it's also littered with collectables; many of which tie back into the stages, giving incentive to replay them. Other collectibles offer lore expansion, artwork and music, all of which are accessible via Shadow's room in the menu screen. The music is my favourite thing to collect because I realized that I am able to use them as the background music for any stage I choose - playing through "Rail Canyon" to the theme of "Sky Rail" from SA2 makes the stage infinitely more enjoyable. The hub world also offers plenty of mini-games to engage in for short periods if you don't feel up to running a full stage.
Like mentioned previously I am not a fan of the boost formula - I'm a Sonic Adventure veteran and will forever be based - so I am unable to compare the stages in this game to stages from Sonic Forces for example (a notoriously bad game). That said, I did enjoy the majority of Shadow Generations' stages. They have a good variety of input control which keeps you on-your toes for what comes next. They're interesting and have good pacing. I do feel that there were a few sections in particular stages which were executed poorly, but they take up a very small percentage of what are otherwise pretty solid stages. Chaos Island Act 1 and Kingdom Valley Act 1 are my personal favourites. I also enjoy how cutscenes blend into the gameplay and the way Dooms Eye's sections are incorporated. Those parts are a blast!
I don't want this review to be too long, so I'm just going to round it off by saying that I'd have LOVED if this game was longer! it took what Frontiers was experimenting with and finely tuned it. chefs kiss
