**SPOILER ALERT**
I'm not usually one to review movies, but this one was so bad that I had to check out the reviews online. I wasn't just mildly disturbed; I was very disturbed. There was absolutely no chemistry between the main character and her fiancรฉ. The protagonist's panic about her mother's reaction felt completely unfounded because the movie didn't build up to that moment at all. You don't just spring a marriage announcement on your mom out of nowhere.
The scene where she tells her mom, who happens to be a doctor, about the relationship was especially jarring. Her mom is inexplicably thrilled about the wedding, despite losing her ex-husband and coming off as a stereotypical "man-craved" character. The plot was awful, and it didn't help that everyone seemed to know each other right away. The fact that the parents weren't weirded out by their kids getting marriedโdespite being exes themselvesโwas baffling. Instead, they still love each other, and the mom shows no remorse about her kid getting married.
The movie seems to suggest that if the daughter has a PR career, no one should care about the implied incestuous relationships, which is incredibly disturbing. The mom is portrayed as insecure and readily agrees to marry her daughter's father-in-law after the daughter's wedding, which is neither socially acceptable nor realistic. It's not comedic; it's just corny and unsettling. This movie is truly a #SEXIST male gaze production. Miranda Cosgrove, a very talented actress, framed herself poorly with this role.
