Absolute hot garbage dumpster fire..
Smoke and mirrors effect on this one from Netflix. Seemed like they tried to sell this as a sequel to DARK, but it doesn't even come close. Hard to believe it was the same creators.
Sadly, 1899 was a huge waste of time. The highly rated reviews are probably from people who never watched DARK, which was a creative masterpiece and so well executed.
There are no answers to what the purpose of the show is. All we know is they're on a steamship and some random stuff, that makes no sense, happens and then they are supposedly in space 200 years from now. Everything in between E:1-E:8 was very boring. The dialogue was awful. The acting was cringy. There were many repeated lines "this can't be real", "where is the captain".. There was no logic, explanation or reasoning to the storyline, characters or those triangular symbols all over the place..
There are so many unanswered questions. Now that we know they are in space (if THAT is even true)... WHY are they in space? Did they all in fact kill people, which lead them to escape from Europe to America, or the reason they're in space? What was in everyone's letters? Who were the letters from? Why so many different languages (they would never understand each other if this were a real situation)? What is the reasoning behind them all being in the simulation together? Who are those people to one another? Why did Maura kill her son? Was he sick? Is he really dead? Is her dad dead? They weren't in the spaceship at the end. Why on earth would you (Maura and Daniel) create a never ending simulation where you die horrific deaths over and over and over again? Was the simulation always set up this way or was there a glitch in the system when her brother took over? Good shows need to have some basis to go on in order to survive more seasons.
They refer to 1423 of them as "passengers", was this voluntary? I assume the 550 crew members are there by choice, with it being referred to as "Project Prometheus". They literally stole the name "Prometheus" from the Alien movie franchise. The name Prometheus is about the only thing that made sense at the end, with them being in space.
I kept thinking something really cool was going to happen, hence why I didn't delete it off my watchlist after a couple episodes. They could have spun some cool elements into the show, but they didn't. I thought the character Eyk was the "key".. instead they chose to remove the literal key she had and use her wedding ring as the key to a new triangle device... just nonstop nonsense from start to finish with no creativity.
This seemed very sloppy and not well planned out, in my opinion. The ending felt very rushed and a lot like "The 100 / Lost in Space" and did not leave me wanting more. I would be shocked if this gets picked up for a second season.
