I wanted to enjoy this, but it is just Rory trying to set out his stall for why he’s smarter than everyone else. I especially cringed when I got to a section where he described two almost identical situations in completely different ways, making him seem in the right in both: he rocks up to a new job at DEFRA and asks people on the spot to come up with a plan for the next few years, and portrays them as muppets for not being able to do so; then literally on the next page he asserts that his new boss was a muppet for expecting him to come up with his own plan in short order.
Helpfully, this book has inspired me to stop listening to The Rest is Politics podcast - that declutters my iPhone at least!
To be fair, all memoirs are a bit like this, but I think I’d just expected something a bit more thoughtful from him.
