Dune is a masterpiece. What strikes me most is that due to Herbert's ideas and the book's setting, it is timeless. Even though the book was originally published in 1965, I was unable to tell this. Even knowing it was an old book, I couldn't fathom to not estimate the publishing date at somewhere in the 80's. Unlike Asimov or other science fiction authors, Herbert maintains an awe-striking style of writing and world-building which manages to be free of that un-specifiable something which could make the story seem as if it were written in an older, more formal, or more boring time.
