I find it pretty fitting that a lot of the good reviews come from a personal experience such as, "oh I loved listening to his music as a child", or, "I went to see the orchestra during filming and it was amazing". Being able to experience that first hand is the only way someone would rank this film highly. Classical music history has a wonderful place on the silver screen, with more interesting characters with more interesting stories. Tchaikovsky would have made a better protagonist with a better story in a more interesting time with more fitting music.
In all honesty it felt like the movie was made by someone who's right out of college. someone with a big budget and trying really hard to be artsy with no experience.
I dread the possibility of producers and executives pointing to this movie as a reason not to do more classical music films in the future.
two stars.
