I am an avid Lovecraft fan, and despite my hesitation with this movie, and the alterations they made such as the era it takes place and so on, it was amazing. I do thing they could’ve gone further psychologically and reaaally messed with you but watching the characters descend into madness was enthralling. Nic Cage’s performance perfectly matches the tone, despite what many people are saying about it. His up and downs gradually worsening match the environment and fit into how each individual takes a turn. The ending had me locked in and the colors of the movie are truly awesome. While it’s impossible to create a film with an impossible color, magenta was a great choice because we perceive that color much differently than most, so it pops more. The movie is unique and could pave the way for future renditions of lovecraftian horror. I would full heartedly recommend. Another interesting movie that uses elements from Lovecraft is “Underwater” that came out in recent years.
