Qualities:
- Esthetically quite nice (including the soundtrack). The evolution of artistic choices following the evolution of Bella's growing mind is novel and mostly well done.
- The tone of the movie is overall well mastered. There's a sense of naive humor that works for me.
- Great acting, I think everyone agrees on it. Some characters are quite well written (like Godwin, or Duncan)
Downsides:
- The rhythm is slow, especially towards the middle of the movie (the Paris part essentially), with parts stretching unnecessarily. I'm not always turned off by slow rhythm, if it's well done, I like nothing more. But the Paris part of the journey, and some others feel empty and frankly boring.
- I may be biased as a european on this one - but some lines or characters sound like they are made as a message for 21st century american politics. This is something frequent in badly written modern movies, but I'm a bit disappointed that it happens in a movie with ambitious writing and artistic orientation like this one.
- The plot lacks purpose, which can harm viewer's emotional involvement. I know part of it is done on purpose (to create a sense of "floating" which echoes Bella's journey) - but it's hard to keep up that for 2:30h.
I think Poor Things was close to being a great movie.
