A grim reminder of the moral bankruptcy of the notion that “the ends justify the means”, neatly summarized by the debauched Walter Duranty quoting the old proverb, “you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs”. Referring to the deliberate starvation of millions of Ukrainians in Stalin’s efforts to collectivize farming, Duranty justifies mass murder in the name of modernity. The film describes the earliest modern example of mass murder to achieve political ends.
