The first week of playing this game, I was stunned at the graphics and loved the way the game incorporated the PS5 controller's haptic feedback and motion control. The characteristics of each car felt unique, and I was tempted to purchase a steering wheel for a more immersive experience. I'm glad I didn't!
Then, after about a week of playing, I had completed the game to the credits (bar a few incomplete license tests and races). The lack of races is farcical, some tracks only have one race to complete. Would it really have been so hard to add in some more races?
The car list is also pretty dire. Where on earth is Lotus, a company synonymous with driving purity? There have been a lot of cars released in recent years which are annoyingly omitted. The game contains lot of fictional "VGT" cars nobody cares about, many boring s**tboxes such as the Toyota Prius/Fiat 500, and bizarre dealership structures that means you have to wait in real time to find the car that you want (or recieve a time-dependant, stupid invitation to purchase a car - pointless and unnecessary), and cars so expensive you have to grind race after race until you can drive Fisherman's ranch with your eyes closed....
Wait! You don't have to grind at all! After the 1.07 patch, the prizes for some of the races have been nerfed to the point of taking nearly twice as long to receive the same amount of credits. So what PD is trying to get people to do is to buy credits by virtue of micro-transactions, something which only incompetent racers and kids with their parent's credit cards will think about doing. Every time you win credits ingame, you are faced with a prompt to top up from your account in the PS store. In my mind, a game this new should not have to rely on micro-transactions yet.
The music playlist is ok, but nothing special. It contains familiar music from previous titles, just don't expect the kind of playlist we were treated with in GT4.
To be honest, a lot of us were excited to play GT7 and were willing to overlook some of the ludicrous design choices of the game because the game generally looked and felt nice. But it feels like PD does not care about their loyal fanbase, and are shamelessly guiding people towards micro-transactions.
There is plenty to recommend about this game, and just as much to not. Just don't buy it yet. Wait another year until (hopefully) they've ironed out the kinks with future updates and added more content. I'm hoping that the 1.07 update is just a test to see how fans would react, and given the general consensus on GTPlanet forum, 100% of people hate it.
There is an amazing game here which PD is denying us. They need to sort it out ASAP, or risk alienating it's fanbase forever.
