Well acted. Not a likeable character in the film, with the exception of Philip Roth's rather sympathetic recollections of himself. Overly simplistic portrayal of a young woman with mental health issues: cliched and misogynistic. Roth's world is devoid of humor and light.
The ending of the film was quite unlike my recollection of the ending of the novel. The movie ending was almost absurdly melodramatic.
The movie was interesting in some aspects, particularly the interactions between the Dean and the main character. The rest was largely forgettable, which is more of a criticism of Roth's novel than of the film itself.
It ain't no Animal House; let's put it that way.
