A hero is only as good as their villain, and that is where Lucy falters. It’s a fun, fast paced movie that has a handful of memorable action scenes, but it lacks any real thrill. There is never any real threat to her since she becomes so incredibly overpowered only a fifth of the way into her evolution. This makes the stakes seem empty and hard to care about. The special effects are what make this movie. Some truly incredible sequences reminded me of Inception, with some truly mind bending scenes. The acting is great, and Johansson does a remarkable job of portraying the transition of doe eyed girl to the calculating and dangerous super-powered femme fatale. Unfortunately, without any real challenge to overcome, it all feels empty as the movie closes and seems more of a sci-fi documentary than action movie or thriller. A fun watch, but not enough to call a must see. 3/5
