A promising pilot turned to spill all over the place. They chose not to stick with a singular theme, despite "Lovecraft" being in the name. The magical elements seem overly fantastical instead of dark and gritty, and are rather forced and under explained, while the monster/ghost horror elements feel almost out of place at times. Amidst the otherwise pertinent and gripping period interactions between a middle class black family and despicable white folks, it seems you could select an episode at random and have just as much of an idea of the overall plot if you were to view them in order. Are we watching a missing installment to Indiana Jones? Or AHS? Or even National Treasure?? This could have been so good.
