I never ever write reviews for movies, but I think this one deserves an honest review from someone who grew up with, lived, and breathed The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl as a kid.
Overall I will say the movie itself was a cute movie with a good underlying message of the importance of teamwork for kids. While watching it I felt as though it was a rather "interesting" mix of a Men In Black-esc, Spy Kids, and strangely Incredibles type movie/story. I probably only say Incredibles because of the amount of times Noodles had to use his powers the way that he did. The diversity in this movie was also very exceptional which made me wish the movie had come out when I was a kid, so I believe just about every child could beam while watching it.
But now down to the main reason why I have took the time to write a review and leave only 3 starts is because the movie itself is quite misleading. With all of the talk about Sharkboy and Lavagirl and how they are apart of the movie, it was an extreme let-down for SB and LG fans like myself. The director himself said that their appearance was only a cameo-type thing, which is understandable. But as popular as the original movie was, it was extremely disappointing that the original Actress for Lavagirl returned, but Taylor Lautner did not.. Maybe there was some underlying reason why, but all that was available to read as a reason why was because the role in this movie was very small so "there was no point". But truthfully that is ridiculous. Just like LG had very few lines and screen time, it was very possible for SB (as Taylor Lautner to do the same, rather than being played by some random guy in an awful mask who acted as a creepy mime who did not talk.
One other thing that had come to my attention was the fact that the director stated that We Can Be Heros was simply set in the same universe as SB and LG and that is why they were able to make an appearance in the movie. But that is absolutely ridiculous because We Can Be Heros was set in the real world where there was simply just a difference between people with super powers and normal people and then aliens that also existed, whereas in SB and LG there was strictly the real world and the world in peoples dreams. The whole story was about how powerful your dreams can be and it was understood that "Planet Drool" and Sharkboy and Lavagirl themselves were only as real as your dreams could be. So with that same logic I questioned the entire time whether or not the setting in We Can Be Heros was all real or fake. Was it in dreamland or reality. It's unclear which leads me to believe that the director of this movie perhaps heard that people were looking for a SB and Lavagirl sequel and decided to market his personal movie idea as SB and LG's kids and what-not. With this in mind I can only grant this movie 3 stars. Cute movie overall, good for kids, but with SB and LG's storyline in mind, none of it makes any sense and sorely feels like a missed opportunity and a huge disappointment.
