It's a fine record. There's a lot of really nice songs. Unfortunately it doesn't sound nearly as revolutionary or innovative as the reviews seem to indicate. It feels like an early 2010's indie album that just doesn't fit well into the new musical landscape. The arrangements are cute, they're dense while also feeling like they were recorded in her bedroom. The percussion is very forward and engaging even if it's not clear exactly whether you're hearing drums or pencils tapping. It's a pleasant listen, but it's very confused and in my opinion it lyrically falters way more often than the reviews seem to indicate. Heavy Balloon might be my favorite track if it weren't for the chorus hook beling out with full confidence a line that feel like a list of gardening facts: "I spread like strawberries; I climb like peas and beans", is not a very badass line, despite how much Fiona wants to convince us otherwise. Overall, it's fine. It's not a masterpiece, it doesn't do anything whatsoever that makes it deserve a revolutionary 10/10 score, it's not going to change the musical landscape for the next decade. It's just a pleasant listen, even if it feels stuck in the past.
