I thought the movie was great, no exceptionally great , EXCEPT
for this one scene where the Dr. Shirley was shown chained to a pole naked with a white man. This was a scene that I personally felt could have been omitted from the movie. The movie was going along great and I was all into it, and then Hollyweird hit us with this, like a baseball bat to the back of the head. I saw Dr. Shirley as a talented poised black man with a great life story for me to see. He had a few personal family issues that he was drinking to mask but no where in the movie was his sexuality ever an issue, questionable or should have been exposed. For the rest of the movie that scene changed my whole feeling about the character of Dr. Shirley, and the movie, I didnt see him the same after that scene; Honestly we almost got up and left after this scene. I don't know why Hollywood always does this to their characters, especially people of color. There were so many other areas of Dr. Shirley's life that would have been of interest to the viewers. Maybe dive into why his relationship with his brother and ex-wife was severed. I even thought that maybe he would call his brother at the end of the movie when he was alone on Christmas Eve. The movie had a lot of fun scenes, Tony and Dr. Shirley developed as sense of respect for each as they saw each differently as their friendship grew. It was an awesome movie if the writers would only remove that one scene that exposed Dr.Shirley's sexuality or weakness on this one night. I get so tired of Hollywood pushing this agenda on people, I cant get through a show or a movie these days without this being pushed on me. I am so glad that I didnt bring my younger family members to see this especially the young men, they would have been so disappointed. That one scene messed up the whole movie for me. SMH
