Napoleon (the movie) didn't "blow my dress up." I love historical dramas and was somewhat disappointed. In all fairness and honesty, i dont know the history of Napoleon's story, so i cant comment on the movie's accuracy. Albeit, historical accuracy is important to me and i would think to modern-day France as well.
My biggest negative critique is that it seemed there was no attempt by the French, Russian or English characters to portray the demographic origins of their roles which left their performances very nonconvincing. Joaquin Phoenix spoke like...well...a stoic Joaquin Phoenix, not a high-ranking French officer. Did the actors undergo proper speech instruction? I think not.
However, a redeeming quality was the cinematography.
