Loosely Spoiler-free review
A reminder, the story is about ab/se, not romance. The cinema said the movie is 12+, for which I disagree. There's a lot of sug/estive and vi/lent scenes.
As a person who dislikes Colleen Hoover's works, and has read the first half of the book... At leasttt the ab/se was taken more seriously!!! Genuinely horrifying. A woman's nightmare. We were jumping in our seats and gasping.
The flirting and dialogue in the first part is as cringe as the book. It made a lot of girls squeal in the cinema, so I guess it did its intended job. Very awkward to watch and get through (for me, personally) but I'm sure fans of the book will love it. It followed the book's script and chronological order, and the scenes were exactly as described. I was even surprised by some of the shots, they were close to what I was picturing in my head while reading it.
A great con:
her personal thoughts DON'T EXIST in the movie. The story works so much better by removing her personal thoughts and just showing the scenes that are spinning in her head. Definitely an upgrade from the book. I think it made the overall experience more serious and up to the viewer to feel for her and think about what she's going through internally.
The thing saving it was the amount of money that was poured into the production. Without that and the better handling of the serious topics, it'd be a close copy of the book. And the book is...nicely said....not good. (But that's irrelevant, fan or not, you're here to read about someone's thoughts on the movie, so I won't comment further.)
Spoilers:
As I dropped the book halfway, I didn't seem much of Atlas in that version of the story. But his movie version is a big green flag. Adult him is a real man, he helps her and pushes his own personal feelings aside so he'll be able to be someone she can rely on. He didn't use their past against her, he just cared for her and wanted her to be safe. It was touching to see, all things considered.
Actors:
Lily's actor may resemble her a lot, but I do think she looks a bit older than the in-story age. She did a great job portraying such a complicated role.
For Atlas, the actor was not what I imagined, but I really liked him as the character.
At least they picked an older-looking actor to be a neurosurgeon(Ryle), bc in the book it was unrealistic enough. I will say that I imagined him with short hair and much more basic. He did good, his acting very convincing.
And teen Atlas is... No comment....Where's the long hair...my image of him was very different, but the actor still did good. Young Lily was fine too.
