I just finished watching season one and reading the reviews. I think a lot of reviewers were expecting this to be an action-packed adventure series. This, it is not. It is not meant to be. This series is exploring all aspects of the lives of those who dare to venture into space and explore other planets. This requires good character development and a knowledge of the problems faced with manned exploration. This is what season one does for us.
Too much character development? Maybe, but I personally do not think so. The more we understand the characters and the difficulties of space exploration the more we can empathize during their trials and tribulations.
The First appears to be a well-thought-out, thorough dive into all aspects of the Mars mission. It takes time to develop a show and its characters to the point you can really understand their nuances and how the mission is really affecting them. This series will take patience, but will be well worth the time as this series progresses. It may very well be the best program to date for portraying what real life would be like for those involved in the space exploration program.
I will admit, half way through the first season, I too was getting a bit bored and antsy to move on. But perseverance pays and, by the end, I understood why there was a need for such intense character development and was psyched for the second season to come out.
