My husband and I had the pleasure of listening to this book together during a spring 2023 road trip. Hearing it read by the author himself made it all the more moving as we listed to his insightful account of his beloved mother’s tragic death, his military career, falling deeply in love with his amazing wife, the births of his first two children, their departure from the royal family and everything else in between. ‘Spare’ is not just the unfortunate term used to refer to the author. It also perfectly describes the simple, straightforward style of this memoire. Yet, he doesn’t spare the numerous mistakes and poor choices made as he’s grown up and learned to live a meaningful, compassionate, useful life. The book offers a frank, behind-the-curtain glimpse into the treacherous machinations of the British monarchy, complete with ambitious courtiers sorely lacking both in the milk of human kindness and skill at media relations. Not everyone will agree with my review. Fair enough. But before trashing the book or its author, you should read or listen to it. I wish every happiness for the author and his growing family.
