I loved it. My kids loved it. I was totally looking forward to seeing this... tired of big budget movies regurgitated, I wanted to see something light, inspiring and that would make me laugh out loud and i wouldnt have to take too seriously. Next Goal Wins did not disappoint. Sure, some of the jokes were cheesy, but most were just funny. Some of the back stories had a few gaps and in some parts the story felt rushed. But I still absolutely loved it, and still feel compelled to give it 5 stars because i did love it that much. I genuinely laughed out loud. I sobbed in parts, and I walked out feeling a little lighter.
There wasn't as much soccer play as I was expecting. But it didn't seem to matter. I fell in love with the people and culture, they were so endearing. I didn't see them as sappy at all. I saw them as loyal people, savvy people, people who can see through the BS to what really matters.
Overall, it was a really lovely movie. I would watch it again in a heartbeat, and definitely will. Don't take notice of the overly serious negative reviews, this movie wasn't made to be analysed to such an extent. It was made for people to enjoy a nice story and feel good. It achieved its objective. I can't see how anyone would be offended with any part of this movie, they must be angry people looking for something to be more angry about. If I was American Samoan I'd have been thrilled with how awesome they made the people and culture appear.
I recommend giving it a shot. You won't regret it.
